2008 Pack Summer Activities List
Mon, June 2 Scout Night at the Duck Pond 7:05pm game at Warner Park
Madison Mallards take on the Mankato Moon Dogs. This is a Council event -- see the Council website for details.
Thurs, June 5 Cub Scout Recruitment Night 6-8pm at the Verona Public Library
If you know of anyone interested in being a Cub Scout, this is the place to find out what scouting is all about. Boys who will be in 1st - 4th grades next year are eligible.
Sun, June 8 Verona Hometown Days Parade
Parade starts at noon - line up time and other detail will be sent out soon. All cub scouts and leaders are encouraged to participate. All participants must wear Class-A uniforms to march in the parade.
Fri, June 20 - Sun, June 22 Day Camp.
Pack 549 is going to Brigham County Park. Siblings (K-5th grade) are welcome to join us. Parents need only attend one of the three days. Check out the video on the council website. Contact Eric Birschbach (848-3741) ASAP if you plan to attend.

Games, treats, camp fire program (songs and skits). Come in your Class B uniform (Pack T-shirt) and enjoy scouting fun as the scouts of Pack 549 celebrate summer and welcome new scouts to the Pack.
Sat, June 28 Rhythm and Booms
Rain date: June 29 - see the Council website for details. Participants canvas the crowd to collect funds for R&B charities. In return, participants get…
- free bus ride to and from the event
- free dinner
- a 2008 R&B patch
- VIP seating for the fireworks show

This is an overnight camp with many activies throughout the day. Contact Camp Coordinators Mitch Poppen or Eric Birschbach ASAP to register. Space is limited.

Cake Bake Pack Meeting April 24
The cake bake is an opportunity for each Scout (Tiger through Webelos) to participate in a fun baking activity with his parent. All money raised from this auction will go to the Verona Food Pantry.
General Rules
1) Cakes must be at the meeting at 6:30 pm, on the April 24th Pack meeting at Glacier's Edge
2) Cakes must be baked by a boy and parent (mother, father, grandmother grandfather, sister, brother.)
3) Non-scout siblings may bake and bring a cake if they wish.
4) Completely store-bought cakes are not permitted.
5) Cake mixes and icing mixes may be used.
6) Creation must be edible.
7) Cakes should be placed on a tray or cardboard foundation that can be given away with the cake.
8) All cakes should have a title or theme shown on a card submitted with the cake along with the baker's name.
9) Tickets will be sold for $ .50 each. Scouts bid for a cake by depositing tickets with their name written on the back into the cup for the cake. Placing more tickets in the cup increases the scout's chance of winning.
10) A drawing for the cakes will take place and the baler/artist will be allowed to draw for the winning ticket.
11) Each scout (or sibling) may take home only one cake or the first cake that they win.
Parents, please remind your kids that the object of this is to have fun together while raising money for the Food Pantry. We usually have more scouts than cakes and siblings are allowed to bid for cakes, too. This means that it IS possible that you might go home without a cake. Please prepare your scout for that possibility and remind him that a successful cake is one that brings in lots of tickets.

Raingutter Regatta March 15th
The Raingutter Regatta differs from the Pinewood Derby in that it is not in any way an engineering contest. The single biggest variable in Raingutter racing success is the scout’s ability to blow his boat down the gutter. For this reason, design rules are very strict, and the emphasis on fair play and sportsmanship in racing is high.Where: Curtis Ambulance, 6060 McKee Rd, Fitchburg (across from Star Cinema).
Parking: There is extremely limited parking available at the Curtis Ambulance building. Please park across the street at Star Cinema and cross McKee Rd. (Hwy PD) with care.

How it works (from 2007 plan)Scouts in each den race in head to head heats. The rankings are determined by who wins the most heats, with any ties being decided by run-off races. The double elimination bracket accommodates 32 racers. We have 11 dens. There are trophy prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each den. Tiger cubs who do not place in the top three in their den will receive a participation ribbon.
In general, the top three finishers in each den advance to the pack finals. If a den has three or fewer scouts in attendance at the race, the race organizers may decide to enter only the top two in the pack finals. If a den has six or more scouts in attendance at the race the race organizers may decide to enter the top four finishers in the pack finals.
Experience teaches that sometimes scouts who place 1 – 3 in their den leave before the pack finals, opening spaces in the bracket. What this means is that we won’t really know exactly who will be in the pack finals until we’re ready to start. It all depends on how many scouts show up on the day and how long they stay. All scouts who win a den trophy should stick around (or let the race coordinator know that they are coming back) for the beginning of the pack finals. Anyone who places forth out of six or more scouts in a den has a chance of being in the finals too.

Pinewood Derby Rules
Our annual Pinewood Derby is coming up Saturday, January 19 2008, at Erickson Chevrolet in Verona!
Car weigh-in and impounding on Thrusday, January 17 at the packmeeting at Glaciers Edge School. If you did not pickup a car at the December pack meeting, pick one up from your Den Leader.
We will be very strict about the rules, so please read them carefuly, and if you have questions, please feel free to ask your leader or a den leader from a older den. Pinewood_rules_2008.pdf

There are 100s of car building tips, decals, and extras out there. Search the internet for pinewood derby and you will be overwhelmed. HOWEVER, We want to keep it simple, keep the kids involved, and keep it fair. Please follow the rules above and ensure everyone has fun.
Polar Prowl February 16
Firebuilding, winter survival, sled race, Dutch oven cooking. Scouts who have gone to other winter events liked this one the best. Registration opens at 11am, program runs noon-4pm.
